Glazing

CMC Offers a wide range of glass and glazing options.

Concept Millwork is able to supply a wide range of glass and glazing options to suit any project. Most of the doors will be specified as true divided lite which indicates that each glass opening will have its own piece of glass. Our standard glass thickness is 1/4″ for most interior applications (Other thicknesses are available upon request). Some standard options available are:

  • Tempered Glass – This usually consists of a single layer of 1/4″ glass which has been heat treated to “temper” the glass. It produces a very strong piece of glass when struck from the surface but will shatter into many relatively un-sharp pieces if struck at the edge. This is necessary for applications that are in a heavy traffic area and/or most commercial applications. A logo will be stamped on each piece of glass showing the tempered insignia unless otherwise specified.
  • Laminated Glass – This usually consists of 2 layers of un-tempered (annealed) glass sandwiched on both sides of a vinyl layer (clear or white). This ensures that if the glass is broken, the sharp pieces do not fall away from the inside layer of vinyl. This is used for impact rated or other safety applications.
  • Insulated Glass – This consists of 2 or more layers of (usually tempered) glass fabricated into a unit that they are separated by an airspace to create an insulating value.
  • Beveled Glass – This is the same as tempered glass except the glass is beveled on the edge of one side prior to tempering. This is primarily for decorative applications and can be made into an insulated unit also.
  • Acid Etched – This is commonly referred to “Sandblasted” or “Frosted”. It is usually tempered glass that has been treated on one side to give the glass a white opaque look.

Please contact the factory for any other glazing options not listed above.

Factory Finishing

CMC offers primed, painted and custom stain options.

Concept Millwork offers an extremely high-quality factory finish for all our products. Due to the nature of Stile and Rail doors, our products are finished in the horizontal position, allowing for a high solid, uniform layer of one of the most durable finish products available.

Our catalyzed conversion varnish has performance characteristics that exceed industry standards. Its non-yellowing formula was specifically designed for wood surfaces where extreme moisture and chemical exposure is a concern. It can be pigmented to be used as an opaque finish, or applied over our hand wiped stains to further enhance the natural beauty of the wood. In either case, it will hold its clarity over the years, and will not yellow like conventional finishing products.

Our wiping stains are specially formulated to create a natural stain effect that enhances the wood’s unique characteristics by allowing the grain to show through. Each door is meticulously wiped and checked for consistent color and color matching of the approved sample. Concept Millwork has many standard colors available, but we are more than capable of matching any color that you may desire. We request that a minimum 6″x6″ sample be sent for matching.

For paint grade doors, our water-based primer is an excellent product with very high solids for filling the pores of the wood and creating a smooth uniform surface. It exhibits excellent adhesion to wood products and is a high-quality base coat with outstanding holdout of most commonly used topcoats.

FINISHING PROCEDURES

The following finishing procedures are followed when we are applying the various finishes to our products.

PRIMER

  1. Doors are sanded with 120 grit paper through the wide belt sander.
  2. All sharp edges are broken.
  3. Primer is applied by state-of-the-art spray equipment.
  4. Primer is scuff sanded for a smooth uniform finish.
  5. Doors are crated or palletized depending on method of delivery.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL DOORS MUST BE FIELD SANDED PRIOR TO REFINISHING IN ORDER TO REMOVE ANY HANDLING MARKS.

OPAQUE FINISHES

  1. Doors are sanded with 120 grit paper through the wide belt sander.
  2. All sharp edges are broken.
  3. Primer is applied by state-of-the art spray equipment.
  4. Primer is scuff sanded, prepared to receive opaque pigments.
  5. Doors are sprayed with a high solids, pigmented formula.
  6. Step 5 is repeated. (if necessary)
  7. Doors are packed with foam and crated or palletized depending on method of delivery.

TRANSPARENT FINISHES

  1. Doors are hand sanded with a 150 to a 180 grit paper, (depending on species) to remove all cross grain scratches and break all sharp edges.
  2. A generous coat of stain is applied and then removed with a soft cotton cloth.

NOTE: Step 3 is not necessary for a clear finish.

  1. Doors are checked for uniformity of color (if stained), then a thick coat of sealer is applied to all 6 sides including hardware cut-outs.
  2. Doors are sanded with a 320-400 grit paper and verified for smoothness.
  3. Doors receive a coat of catalyzed conversion varnish.
  4. Repeat step 4.
  5. Doors receive an additional coat of catalyzed conversion varnish, to ensure a smooth uniform finish.
  6. Every door is individually inspected, and packed with foam, crated or palletized depending on the method of delivery.

NOTE: If a filled finish is required, a filler is applied after step 2, creating a smooth surface.

FIELD FINISHING

All field finished doors must be handled with clean gloves and lightly sanded with the grain prior to finishing. All 6 sides, including hardware cutouts, must be sealed with a wash coat prior to staining. An additional sealer must be applied to all 6 sides, including hardware cutouts, after any staining of the doors. The sealer must be sanded prior to top coating. In any event, CONCEPT MILLWORK CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIELD FINISHING. Please Click the following Link for a copy of “How to store, handle, finish, install and maintain wood doors”.
